Pet Halloween Safety Tip # 1

No tricks, no treats: That bowl of candy is for trick-or-treaters, not for Scruffy and Fluffy. Chocolate in all forms—especially dark or baking chocolate—can be very dangerous for dogs and cats. Candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can also cause problems. If you do suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please call us ASAP!

Look What Desiree Found!

Desiree has been a veterinary technician assistant with Bernville Veterinary Clinic since 2002. She graduated from Penn State University in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in animal sciences. Last week, while on her nightly walk with her right-hand hound, Dobbie, Desiree happened across this beautiful 6-month-old kitten, who walked right up to them and started purring away. Scarlett, as Desiree named the kitten, was examined and vaccinated by Dr. Pickett. Everyone is charmed by her extra toes, her playfulness and her lovable nature. Today, Scarlett will be spayed, fully vaccinated, dewormed and ready for her forever home.

Do you Know the Difference between a DVM and a VMD Degree in Veterinarians?

The Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD) degree is only awarded to veterinarians by the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA. It is equivalent to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree awarded by all other US veterinary schools. The difference stems from the origin of the Penn School of Veterinary Medicine as the Veterinary Department of the Medical School. As the Medical School awarded the Medicinae Doctoris (MD) degree to graduate physicians, it was consistent to use a similar Latin format for the veterinary degree. With a similar origin, the Penn School of Dental Medicine awards the Dentariae Medicinae Doctoris (DMD) to dentists.

Our hospital was founded in 1990 by Dr. Steve Stephan in the fall of 1989 when Dr. Stephan acquired the Northkill practice from Dr. A. Godfried on Shartlesville Road. At the time it was a part time practice run out of a several room small building. Pretty soon the Bernville Veterinary Clinic outgrew the small building and it was expanded on that site. In 1994 we decided that this area needed more veterinary and pet related services than even the expanded building could handle so the present hospital and spa were constructed.

Cute Patient of the Week: Smokey!

Smokey was in last week for a routine procedure and just after waking up she began talking to us. Her quiet mewing gradually became louder until we realized she was hungry. Smokey devoured three small bowls of canned food before napping peacefully until her pickup time. I guess she was putting our five star service to the test. She reminded us of the saying, “As every cat owner knows, nobody owns a cat.” – Ellen Perry Berkeley
