The Berks ARL’s Grey Muzzle Foster Program

Do you love older pets or ones with special needs? The Berks ARL’s Grey Muzzle program needs you! The ARL is always looking for foster homes who would be willing to provide temporary care for older or special needs pets while they look for their forever homes. How does it work? • The ARL pays for vet care, you only need to provide food and toys (and love of course!) • The ARL will do a home visit and check vet references to ensure that the pet is going into a good environment. • If you have one or more dogs, they must visit the ARL’s shelter to meet a foster dog to ensure that they will get along. And your pets must be up-to-date on vaccines and have current licenses. • Foster homes must have their own transportation, commit to providing the pet with proper vet care and adequate exercise, and can bring the pet to the shelter when necessary to meet potential adopters. If you are interested in volunteering as a foster parent, please download and fill out a foster application: http://www.berksarl.org/Foster%20application%202013.pdf You can mail, fax, or stop in the shelter to drop off your application. Upon review, you will have a one-on-one interview with their foster coordinator to ensure your home and circumstances are appropriate for fostering. Thank you for considering being a foster parent with Gray Muzzle. If you have any more questions, please email MTocker@berksarl.org or call (610) 373-8830 extension 119. There are 2 Stevie Wonders: A musical genius and a dog available for adoption through Grey Muzzle!

I would like to introduce myself. I am a distinguished older gentleman who is at least 10 years old. My name is Stevie Wonder. I am neutered and I have clean teeth. Well, the few I have left are clean! I am sight impaired, but that doesn’t stop me. I like to be petted and sleep in my little bed. My favorite activity is relaxing. I would be a good companion for an older person or someone with a quiet home. I know I can’t see, but I deserve a home just as much as everyone else! No small kids for me! We LOVE Grey Muzzle!

As a 7-year-old, Chancey was brought to the shelter in terrible condition. She had not been groomed for a very long time so her coat was matted all over and her nails were so long that they grew into her pads. Chancey had skin, eye and ear infections, and a thyroid condition. She went into an amazing foster home through the ARL’s Grey Muzzle program and was treated for all of her health conditions. Because her skin condition was so severe, her brow drooped over her eyes – so she is scheduled to have a brow lift! Chancey found a forever home this week! Holly is a Grey Muzzler with a Heart of Gold

We first met Holly, a Grey Muzzle dog, and her foster mom when she came in to our hospital for a check-up. She is a Chihuahua mix with a heart of gold. After having surgery to remove her bladder stones she is right as rain and ready for adoption. She would love nothing more than to spend these cold winter months snuggled up on the lap of her new owner.

Meet Grey Muzzle … a Critical Part of the Animal Rescue League of Berks County

Bernville Veterinary Clinic has a special place in its heart for groups that share our commitment to caring for those in our society that are at the greatest risk …. that’s why we are a strong supporter of Grey Muzzle, which removes vulnerable senior and special-needs dogs from the shelter environment and places them in foster homes where they can thrive. Grey Muzzle is an important part of the Animal Rescue League of Berks County. The shelter environment is a stressful and scary place for all animals, but for older dogs it is especially traumatic. Unforutnately senior dogs are often overlooked in favor of young puppies. The Grey Muzzle foster program places these dogs in foster care where they receive the necessary medical and dental care they need to make them adoptable. Since the program was created in 2009, Grey Muzzle has adopted out more than 250 senior dogs! Want to learn more about Grey Muzzle, or join their foster family network?
